M.Sc. PROGRAM IN MEDICAL PHYSICS

*INTERNAL APPLICATION DEADLINE*

M.Sc. program in Medical Physics for
2013-2014 academic year:

JANUARY 15, 2013.

The program extends over two years, is full-time, and comprises classroom courses, laboratories, and an individual research project leading to an M.Sc. thesis.

Students are admitted to this program only at the start of the Fall semester in September of a given academic year, i.e., there is no January entry to the program.

The prerequisite for admission into the program is a B.Sc. degree in physics (honors or major) or equivalent, with an average mark of at least 70% or a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0.

Application for the 2013-2014 academic year
(beginning in September 2013):

  1. Applicants to the M.Sc. program in medical physics for September 2013 should use the on-line application form for graduate studies at McGill. (Please note that a valid credit card number is required for submission of an on-line application.)

  2. NOTE: When completing the on-line application form, the following information should be entered in the section titled "Program Information" to ensure the application is routed through the system to the correct department:

    1. Program 1: MSc Med Radiation Physics-T
    2. Major: Medical Radiation Physics-T
    3. Dept: Medical Physics Unit

    4. If Dept is entered as "Physics", your application will be routed to the Physics Department and not the Medical Physics Unit - this will involve a new application to the Medical Physics Unit including a second, non-refundable application fee.

    Applications for a given academic year must be submitted and COMPLETED by the preceding January 15. Only complete applications will be considered. International applicants are advised to apply well in advance of the deadline, since immigration procedures may be lengthy.

    The application fee is $100 CAN. To complete an online application, an applicant must include the details for a valid credit card, including the expiry date. The electronic application will not be accepted if credit card information is not included.

    Thesis component: It is not required to select a supervisor at time of application. A successful applicant to the M.Sc. medical physics program will determine the thesis project and also select a supervisor during the second (Winter) semester of the first year of study.

    SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS: It is important to note that as per McGill University policy, any documents submitted as part of an applicant's file for consideration for study at McGill are the property of the Universty and cannot be returned. For verification of this policy, please see section 5.1 Application for Admission (pages 11-12) in the Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies Office "General Information and Guidelines".

  3. In addition to completing the application on-line, the applicant should send or arrange to send the following documents (items 1 through 5 below) to:
    Medical Physics Unit office, L5-113
    Montreal General Hospital
    1650 avenue Cedar

    1. Two original or officially certified transcripts for each university degree program attended.

    2. For non-Canadian students (a) whose mother tongue is not English, or (b) who have not graduated from a Canadian institution (anglophone or franophone, or (c) who have not carried out their B.Sc. degree studies in English, results of an English language test are required; either the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or IBT (internet-based TOEFL):
      English language proficiency: Test information

      1. For the TOEFL test the minimum required score is 550 (paper-based method) or 213 (computer-based method). The minimum required score required on the Test of Written English (TWE) portion of the TOEFL test is 4.0.
      2. In countries where the TOEFL test is not available, the acceptable alternative test is the IELTS. The minimum overall band required is 6.5.
      3. Also accepted is the IBT (internet-based TOEFL). The minimum overall score required is 86, with a minimum of 20 in each of the 4 categories.

      NOTE: The language tests must have been taken within the previous two years from the date of application deadline, i.e., after May 01, 2011 if applying for September 2013. A photocopy of an applicant's test score is acceptable for the selection process by the Graduate Committee, however, if an applicant is offered a place then the original TOEFL or IELTS score report must be submitted to the Medical Physics Unit office by the testing center. The student will not be allowed to register at McGill University prior to receipt of the original score report.

      NOTE: For non-Canadian students who have completed their undergraduate degree where the language of instruction was English, please provide written confirmation from your university on the official university letterhead, stating that the language of instruction during the degree was English.

    3. GRE: The GRE Score is not a requirement.

    4. Original letters of recommendation from at least two professors familiar with the applicant's background, academic performance, and suitability for graduate studies. There is no reference form to complete - referees should submit a signed letter of recommendation on their official university or institution letterhead: letters on blank paper will not be accepted. Letters must be dated within the past two years to be accepted by McGill University.
      Letters should be sent in PDF format to: mak(at)medphys.mcgill.ca.
      Recent changes to McGill University's reference letter policy.

    6. Curriculum vitae including:
      1. Any employment experience, with dates;
      2. Any awards obtained;
      3. Any publications of which the applicant was author or co-author;

  5. The tuition & student services fees for M.Sc. studies during the 2012-2013 academic year are estimated at:
    1. $3,800 for residents of Quebec;
    2. $7,500 for residents of Canada excluding Quebec;
    3. $16,600 for international students.

  6. Important note for landed immigrants/permanent residents: Please note that the Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies Office of McGill University will require a copy of an applicant's document showing either landed immigrant or permanent resident status in Canada. An applicant may submit this copy to the Medical Physics Unit at the same time as submitting the supporting documents for an application to the medical physics M.Sc. program.

  7. Financial help cannot be offered by the Medical Physics Unit during the first two semesters, which are devoted strictly to course work. Potential students are encouraged to apply for government or private scholarships, i.e., arrange their own support for at least the first two semesters. During the second year, the possibility exists for students to obtain support from their thesis supervisors. This is not, however, guaranteed as funding is very limited and distributed on the basis of student merit.

  8. Loans & bursaries: Information on provincial government loans and McGill loans for students is available from the Student Aid Office under the link "Government Aid". The Student Aid Office also awards a limited amount of financial assistance available on the basis of demonstrated need and academic standing.

  9. Fee information: For the most up-to-date fee information, please refer to the Student Accounts Office website for fee schedules, information regarding e-billing, etc.

  10. For general information on funding at McGill University an applicant may view the web page for the Fellowships & Awards Office at the Office of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, or send e-mail to: info@fellowships.fgsr.mcgill.ca. In particular, we suggest viewing the website for the Fellowships & Awards Office, which contains valuable detailed information on available funding and funding procedures.

  11. French-speaking international students: Students from certain French-speaking countries may, if accepted to McGill University, be eligible to pay tuition fees at the same level as Quebec students. For the most up-to-date information regarding countries who have an agreement with the Quebec government and whose students may therefore be exempt from paying fees at the international level, please view the list of countries referred to in the "McGill University International Student Handbook", page 26, under "Fee exemptions". JANUARY 15, 2013.

  1. For applicants who already have an M.Sc. degree in Medical Physics:

    The McGill University Ph.D. program in Medical Physics is run in conjunction with the Department of Physics, which means that the candidate has to fulfill the requirements for a regular Ph.D. in physics in addition to requirements for medical physics. Physics is the department of registration for a successful Ph.D. candidate, and requirements include the passing of the preliminary examination in physics which covers all aspects of modern and classical physics, including quantum and statistical mechanics. A graduate student wishing to enter directly into the Ph.D. program should possess an M.Sc. degree in Medical Physics from an accredited program in Medical Physics and specify which area of medical physics he/she wishes to pursue.

  2. Since an application should be made directly to the Physics Department, the potential applicants are asked to send the completed application to the Physics Department Admissions Office and state that they wish to be considered for acceptance into the Ph.D. program in Medical Physics:
