Monte Carlo (MC) techniques are increasingly involved in a variety of established areas in radiation therapy ranging from radiation dosimetry, treatment planning, development and evaluation of treatment techniques, brachytherapy, etc. In addition to these mainstream areas, MC techniques can be very useful in conjunction with emerging areas involving anatomical and functional imaging for planning and verification, transport in dynamic patient models built from temporal image information using deformable registration and track structure modeling to improve understanding about biological effects of ionizing radiation quality. Research in these emerging areas requires the participation of the various complementary sub-disciplines represented at this workshop.

The Third McGill International Workshop is being organized back to back with the International Conference on Computers in Radiation Therapy (ICCR) to be held in Toronto 2007 June 4 – 7. The topics of the McGill workshop are largely complementary to these of the ICCR conference. Unlike the previous McGill workshop, which was predominantly on MC applications in radiation therapy treatment planning, the approach taken in this edition of the workshop is more general, with emphasis on both algorithm development as well as applications of general-purpose and fast MC calculations in emerging areas in radiation therapy. We exclude the very wide area of applications in diagnostic radiology but encourage contributions involving the use of different types of radiation sources.
